The City is currently not recruiting for any Management Fellows.
About the Program
The Palo Alto Management Fellows Program was a year-long program that allows aspiring
individuals with/or pursuing a graduate degree in public administration, public affairs,
urban planning, environmental management, engineering or related fields, to explore the
workings of local city government. Fellows rotated through three city departments within
Palo Alto (see sample rotation schedules below). Through the course of the program,
fellows engaged in projects that enhanced their understanding and professional
development in City Management. Fellows were also involved in educational
workshops and other networking opportunities that allowed them to further explore
their passion and future endeavors in local city government.
Professional Development
- First-hand view into local management level work within three departments of the City
- Mentoring from innovative government practitioners
- Experience in critical areas that develop report writing, research, presentation and
analytical skills
- Skill enhancement for a successful career in City Management
- Career advancement by attending local and regional professional conferences, engaging
in networking opportunities, and receiving professional development and guidance from
senior managers

Educational Aspect
- Collaborate with the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University
- Learn from City’s Department Directors and other City Officials
- Engage in dialogue and lectures with local university and neighboring city
governments

Salary & Benefits
Management Fellows received a salary of approximately $45,000 per year.
Additionally, vacation leave, sick leave and limited health care benefits were provided
for the one-year period. This will be a PERS exempt position.
