Project Update - May 2012: Soil removal, tree removal and stump grinding has been completed. Street light and irrigation conduit has been installed.
The next phase of the project will begin in May 2012. This phase will include sidewalks, medians and landscaping, in addition to the roadway itself. Lane closures will begin on Tuesday, May 15 going west-bound on San Antonio Road between Middlefield and Highway 101. The new phase of the project includes replacement of concrete medians, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveway aprons and improving the intersection of Middlefield and San Antonio by adding a west-bound left-turn lane. There will be frequent lane closures on San Antonio between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday, but at least one lane will remain open in each direction at all times. Following the concrete work, the roadway and intersections will be repaved with new asphalt. The final phase will be the landscaping and tree planting within the medians, anticipated to begin this Fall. This project will replace aging infrastructure along San Antonio between Highway 101 and Middlefield Road. The San Antonio Landscaping and Median Project – Phase I, from Middlefield Road to Briarwood Way was completed in 2009. This second phase will complete the entire San Antonio corridor.
Construction began in November 2011 and will last approximately one year. Work for this project includes: tree removal, sidewalk replacement, repair and replacement of deteriorating curb, installation of new more sustainable street trees, plant material and irrigation in the medians and sidewalk planting strips and resurfacing of the street. On-street parking will not be allowed in the construction area.
This project will provide a long term solution that will prevent problems associated with tree roots, improved road surface for vehicular and bicycle travel, reduce costly on-going road repairs and provide an aesthetic median planting to complete the San Antonio corridor.
