| | The purpose of the annual Street Maintenance Program is to improve the integrity and service life of the streets. Over the years, the combination of heavy traffic, water (through cracks), and the aging of the asphalt has contributed to the deterioration of some streets in Palo Alto. A pavement management system has been established to protect the City's investment in our 197+ mile street system. The goal of the City's pavement management system is to provide serviceable streets in the most cost-effective way possible. To accomplish this goal, the streets are surveyed, the information is combined with the data on the street's maintenance history, original design, and traffic uses, and then rated by a computerized Pavement Maintenance Management System (PMMS) in order to determine whether maintenance is needed and what type of resurfacing is appropriate. The annual project typically encompasses approximately 10 lane miles of asphalt concrete paving and approximately 30 lane miles of slurry sealing per year, with an annual average budget of $3.8 million.
